Visual Storytelling is a vital tool in today’s communication world. So what is it really?  The definition is new and ever-evolving, however, one great example is this: “A visual narrative (also visual storytelling) is a story told primarily through the use of visual media.  The story may be told using still photography, illustration, or video and can be enhanced with graphics, music, voice and other audio.”  Some studies have shown that 90% of information transmitted to the human brain is visual, and the human brain prefers information packaged as stories.  Visual storytelling is here to stay and its application in our growing multi-media environment is rapidly expanding.

So jump on in!  Whether you are an aspiring filmmaker, photographer, television reporter, or business owner you will need the skills learned in these courses.

About the Studio:

The Career Academy & Technical School opened the doors to the Television Studio in January of 2013.  Artfully designed by instructor Tanya Topazio, the space functions as well as a professional studio, yet still promotes collaborative learning.  This 2,300 square foot production space houses a full studio, complete with green screen wall, 14’ ceilings, lighting grid, and control room, as well as an expansive iMac editing lab with access to the Adobe Creative Cloud suite.  The studio is outfitted with all equipment students need to produce their own films and television shows.

Program Overview

The courses are designed to prepare each student for an easy transition into college, trade schools or directly into the field, providing networking job shadow opportunities for students to begin building their bank of mentors. Beyond production, students also focus on communication, organization, teamwork, community involvement, and meeting deadlines; skills required in any career path they may choose.

At CATS, the students learn from an instructor who has worked coast-to-coast in commercial and television production with companies such as Propaganda Films, ESPN, ABC, VH1, Fox Sports and many more!

All classes are honors level, 2-block classes.  The digital filmmakers learn nearly every aspect of the film industry, focusing on understanding the fundamentals of producing a film as they write, film and edit several short films.  The TV studio course introduces students to producing and directing "live-to-tape" productions including news, talk shows, and scripted dramas.  Our newest program, initiated in 2025, is audio (radio) production.  A collaboration with WAME of Statesville, students produce radio segments for air on 92.9 FM radio.
