Courses Offered

Firefigter I & II are taken together in the same semester. 

Firefighter I covers part of the NC Fire Fighter I/II combination certification modules required for all firefighters in North Carolina including Fire Department Orientation and Safety; Fire Prevention, Education, and Cause; Fire Alarms and Communications; Fire Behavior; Personal Protective Equipment; Portable Fire Extinguishers; and Fire Hose, Streams, and Appliances. English language arts are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course including job shadowing. Apprenticeship and cooperative education are not available for this course. This course prepares students for the North Carolina Firefighter I certification module. 

Firefighter II covers additional NC FireFighter I/II combination certification modules required for all firefighters in North Carolin including Ropes; Ladders; Forcible Entry; Ventilation; Water Supply; Sprinklers; and Foam Fire Stream. English language arts are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course including job shadowing. Apprenticeship and cooperative education are not available for this course. This course prepares students for the North Carolina FireFighter II certification modules.

In this course, book learning to prepare for the Firefighter III state certification test will be offered.*  Basic Firefighter I & II skills are reinforced with the addition of instruction in fire control, salvage & overhaul, emergency medical care, rescue and building construction. In addition, students select one specific occupation in the Fire Career Cluster and conduct research to include the nature of the work, work environment, training, education, and advancement, and job prospects. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include job shadowing and internship.  

*Due to age restrictions and current laws, students are not allowed to participate in live burns.  Although book training is offered at the school, Firefighting III certification must be completed outside of the CATS facility.
