The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is the organization that certifies automotive technicians. ASE certifications are offered in automotive repair, collision and medium/heavy duty trucks. ASE also offers an ASE master technician certification. In order for a technician to obtain automotive master certified he must pass the eight certification test in engine repair, automatic transmissions, manual transmissions, steering and suspension, brakes, electrical, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance. Technicians also must have two years’ experience in the work force before they can obtain their certification.
There is a side of ASE that most people are unaware of called NATEF. The National Automotive Technician’s Education Foundation (NATEF) certifies the schools that teach automotive repair. Schools that are NATEF certified have to meet many standards set by NATEF. NATEF has standards for automotive technology, collision and medium/heavy duty trucks. The Iredell-Statesville Automotive Technology Center in Troutman is an Automotive NATEF certified school.
NATEF has student certification tests just like ASE. The student tests use the same format and the tests are written by a committee in the same room as the ASE tests. Since students cannot get ASE certified (Because of the two year experience requirement) ASE offers a student ASE certification. Students at the Automotive Technology Center in Troutman have the opportunity to test and obtain their ASE Student Certification or the ASE Student Master Certification. Upon completion of two years of professional experience beyond CATS, students may become fully ASE certified.
